Helambu, home to the Hyolmo people, is a short, easy, and popular trek located near Kathmandu, providing an authentic glimpse into the local lifestyle, culture, and natural beauty. The trek, which can be completed in as little as 5-6 days but is typically 10 days long, is suitable for adventurers of all levels, making it an ideal option for globetrotters with limited time but enthusiasm for local and rural livelihood.

The journey starts in Kathmandu and takes an hour's drive to reach the quiet trailhead at Sundarijal. From there, the trek passes through a temperate forest of Rhododendron, green valleys, Tamang and Sherpa settlements, and monasteries. The trek leads up to Tharepati Pass (3,650m), the highest point of this trek, and offers stunning panoramic views of Dorje Lakpa, Gauri Shankar, Langsisa, and other snow-capped mountains.

One of the unique features of this trek is the organic and authentic lifestyle of the Hyolmo people. The trek takes you through their humble community, where you can observe and experience their Buddhist traditional lifestyle, along with a greenish terrace farm, and authentic local cuisine. The trek also offers a chance to witness mid-hill natural beauty with lush green forests, waterfalls, and mountain rivers.

At the end of the trek, you have the option to add another day trek to Melamchi or to drive back to Kathmandu, ending the journey on a memorable note. Itinerary

  1. Day 01 Arrival at Kathmandu.

    You will be welcomed by our staff standing with your name card at the airport arrival terminal and transferred to your hotel by vehicle. Your hotel is in the middle of the city. You will have nothing planned for the day, so take a rest and gather the energy to walk on the trails. Else, if you have some personal gears to buy, you can go shopping in the Market in the evening. There will be a small meeting about the trek in the evening. You will spend a night in a hotel.

  2. Day 02 Kathmandu | trek preparation, Permits Procedure

    After enjoying breakfast, you have the option to spend your day exploring the many famous sights around Kathmandu. The city has a unique charm in the early morning as it slowly comes to life, but still remains relatively peaceful. You can choose to have a free day or take advantage of our offer to provide a knowledgeable, English-speaking guide who can lead you to some of the most significant sites and explain their history.
    Optional day tours:
    We offer a variety of optional day tours to choose from, including the Sacred Sites of the Valley, a full-day excursion to visit Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, and you can also visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Boudhanath, and see the world's largest spherical stupa, or explore the largest and most sacred Hindu temple in Nepal.
    For those who want to venture outside of the city, a 30-minute drive will take you to the ancient city of Bhaktapur, known for its medieval art and wood carving. You can also take a one-hour mountain flight to see Mount Everest or go for Day hiking around Kathmandu valley or mountain biking in the scenic Shivapuri National Park, located on the northern edge of the Kathmandu Valley.
    After your day's adventure, you'll return to your hotel in the early evening where you'll meet with our specialist or one of their staff members who will provide you with a detailed briefing of your upcoming trip, including what to expect and transportation logistics.

  3. Day 03 Drive to Sundarijal (1,385m / 4,545ft), Trek to Chisapani (2,295m / 7,655ft) (Drive 1 hrs/ Trek 4-5 hrs)

    After early morning breakfast, we will drive for an hour to reach Sundrijal. we begin our journey to Chisapani, which will take about four to five hours. The trail further takes us to Shivapuri National Park. After trekking up a ridge around 1,895m and 600m above Sudarijal, you will reach Mulkhara - a Tamang settlement. Then we walk by the ridge and through a dense forest full of oaks and rhododendrons. During spring, the forest will be blooming with multi-coloured rhododendrons. We trek through the forest until we reach Chisapani. You can choose to board a comfortable Local Vehicle, which we provide for this route, or have your private vehicle arranged to pick you up from your hotel. Depending on your preference and requirements. Please remember to inform us of your choice while booking your trip

  4. Day 04 Chisapani (2,295m / 7,655ft) to Khutumsang (2,470m / 8,250ft) Trek 6-7 hrs

    After breakfast, we head to Kutumsang, which takes about five to six hours. Trek passes by the side of several meadows and agricultural fields as you enjoy savouring the stunning views of the Langtang mountains. Then we descend from the ridge and reach Pathi Bhanjyang, a small and pleasant village. We further trek to Gulfu Bhanjyang, climbing up a hill to a pass. Another downhill from the pass takes you to Kutumsang.

  5. Day 05 Kutumsang to Tharepati Pass via Mangengoth (3690m)-6 to 7 hours

    After enjoying breakfast, you will begin your journey from Kutumsang towards Mangengoth and then continue to Tharepati Pass (3690m). The trek is expected to take around 6 to 7 hours and you will pass through a stunning forest of pine trees and Rhododendron. During the trek, you will stop for lunch at Mangengoth. While there may be a few basic hotels available on the way, they won't offer luxurious accommodations. Finally, you will reach the beautiful Tharepati Pass, which will be your destination for the day. You will spend the night at Tharepati Pass, enjoying the breathtaking views and a comfortable stay.

  6. Day 06 Thadepati to Tarke Ghyang – 2560 m/ 10925 ft – 6 hrs

    Today the trek involves a rapid descent down a ravine through the small Sherpa village of Melamchi Gaon, where trekkers can visit an old and artistic Gompas. After leaving the village, the trail crosses a river over a bridge and makes a long climb up the other side of the valley to reach Tarke Gyang. Tarke Gyang is the largest village in the Helambu region, and trekkers can reach it by descending through the small Sherpa village of Melamchi gaon and crossing a river over a bridge before making a long climb up the other side of the valley. After exploring the old and artistic Gompas in the small Sherpa village of Melamchi Gaon, the trail leads trekkers across a bridge over the river and on a long climb up the valley to reach Tarke Gyang, the largest village in the Helambu region.

  7. Day 07 Tarke Ghyang to Sermathang – 2610 m / 14632 ft – 3 to 4 hrs

    After breakfast, we will begin our trek from Tarke Ghyang to Sermathang. The trail is relatively easy, passing through flat terrain and beautiful forests. Along the way, you will cross several small streams. About halfway through, you will come across a charming village. When you reach Shermathang, another lovely Sherpa village, you will have the opportunity to visit many ancient monasteries and admire the stunning Jugal Himal range to the north.

  8. Day 08 Sermathang to Melamchi Bazaar – 846 m / 2775 – 3 to 4 hrs

    We will head towards Melamchi Bazaar from Sermathang after breakfast. On the last day of the trek, the trail runs along the ridge and drops down through Kakani, where you will see numerous Chortens. From there, the trail descends steeply towards Dubochaur before dropping even further across the ridge to the junction of the Indrawati and Melamchi rivers. You will cross a suspension bridge over the Melamchi river to reach Melamchi Bazaar.

  9. Day 09 Return to Kathmandu. (1400m)-4-6 hours

    After breakfast, we will catch the local bus from Malemchi Bazar to Kathmandu. You can choose to board a comfortable Local Vehicle, which we provide for this route, or have your private vehicle arranged to pick you up from Malemchi Bazar. Depending on your preference and requirements. Please remember to inform us of your choice while booking your trip.

  10. Day 10 Departure (Breakfast)

    Breakfast at the hotel. Free & easy until the representative of our team will transfer you to the airport and Depart to your own country.
