The Bhairav Kunda Trek is a religious and spiritual journey that also offers stunning natural beauty and breathtaking views. Bhairav Kunda, located near the Nepal-Tibet border in Eastern Nepal, is a sacred lake with significant importance for Hindus, Buddhists, and Shamans. It is believed to be the furious and destructive form of Lord Shiva, known as Bhairav, in Hinduism.

In addition to its religious significance, Bhairav Kunda is worth visiting for its mesmerizing views of the Dorje Lakpa Mountain (6,966m), Rolwaling Himalayan Range, Jugal Himal Range, Madiya Mountain (6,257m), Phurbi Ghhyachu Mountain (6,637m), and other peaks and mountains in Nepal and Tibet. The trek takes you through forests of blooming rhododendrons and other alpine flowers, offering a scenic and picturesque experience. Along the way, you will also encounter ethnic groups and their Mani walls, adding cultural richness to the journey.

The Bhairav Kunda Trek typically spans 12 days, starting and ending in Kathmandu. The trip grade is considered moderate, and the maximum altitude reached is 4,364m (14,318 ft) at Bhairav Kunda. The best seasons for this trek are March to December, excluding the winter months. The itinerary includes various stops at Jalbire, Chanaute, Khani Gaon, Forest Camp, Pati, and finally reaching Bhairav Kunda.

Throughout the trek, you will have the opportunity to explore the local villages, interact with the communities, and experience the cultural and natural wonders of the region. The trip also includes a rest day at Khani Gaon to further immerse yourself in the village's beauty and traditions.

On the final day of the trek, you will have the chance to enjoy a relaxing hot spring bath at Tatopani before returning to Kathmandu. The trek concludes with fond memories of the beautiful landscapes, mountain views, cultural encounters, and unique experiences of the Bhairav Kunda region.

Itinerary

  1. Day 01 Arrival at Kathmandu

    You will be welcomed by our staff standing with your name card in the airport arrival terminal and transferred to your hotel by a private vehicle. Your hotel is in the middle of the city. You will have nothing planned for the day, so take a rest and gather the energy to walk on the trails. Else, if you have some personal gears to buy, you can go shopping in the Market in the evening. There will be a small meeting about the trek in the evening. You will spend a night in a hotel.

  2. Day 02 Kathmandu | trek preparation, Permits Procedure

    After enjoying breakfast, you have the option to spend your day exploring the many famous sights around Kathmandu. The city has a unique charm in the early morning as it slowly comes to life, but still remains relatively peaceful. You can choose to have a free day or take advantage of our offer to provide a knowledgeable, English-speaking guide who can lead you to some of the most significant sites and explain their history.
    Optional day tours:
    We offer a variety of optional day tours to choose from, including the Sacred Sites of the Valley, a full-day excursion to visit Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, and you can also visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Boudhanath, and see the world's largest spherical stupa, or explore the largest and most sacred Hindu temple in Nepal.
    For those who want to venture outside of the city, a 30-minute drive will take you to the ancient city of Bhaktapur, known for its medieval art and wood carving. You can also take a one-hour mountain flight to see Mount Everest or go for Day hiking around Kathmandu valley or mountain biking in the scenic Shivapuri National Park, located on the northern edge of the Kathmandu Valley.
    After your day's adventure, you'll return to your hotel in the early evening where you'll meet with our specialist or one of their staff members who will provide you with a detailed briefing of your upcoming trip, including what to expect and transportation logistics.

  3. Day 03 Drive from Kathmandu to Jalbire 3hrs by bus.

    Starting early in the morning, you'll travel along a bumpy road, passing through Balephi Valley. This valley offers stunning views and is known for its picturesque landscapes. As you continue on the route, you'll leave the main road and opt for a gravel road that leads to Jalbire.
    Jalbire is a historic village situated near the banks of the Balephi River. It holds significance as a village of the Newar community, which has a rich cultural heritage in Nepal. The village offers a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle and architecture of the Newar people.

  4. Day 04 Jalbire to Chanaute 1350m 5hrs.

    Starting from Jalbire, you will trek alongside the picturesque Balephi River. The trail will lead you through enchanting waterfalls and scattered Tamang villages, offering glimpses of the local culture and way of life. The trekking route is known for its scenic beauty and serene surroundings.
    After a few hours of trekking, you will reach Chanaute, a small village primarily inhabited by the Brahmin and Chhetri communities. Chanaute provides a unique opportunity to explore the local lifestyle and cultural traditions of these communities. The village is nestled amidst beautiful natural surroundings and offers a peaceful atmosphere for trekkers.
    Once you reach Chanaute, you can take some time to explore the village, interact with the locals, and immerse yourself in the local culture. You can also visit the Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, which is situated on the banks of the Balephi River.

  5. Day 05 Chanaute to Khani Gaon 2000m 5-6hrs.

    Starting from Chanaute, you will follow a trail that passes through rice fields and forests, gradually ascending above the valley. As you trek deeper into the forest, you'll have the opportunity to witness the diverse flora and fauna of the region. The terrain may be steep at times, but the stunning mountain views along the way will make the journey memorable.
    After reaching the top of the ridge, you will begin your descent, passing through scattered settlements on your way to Khani Gaon. Khani Gaon is a village primarily inhabited by the Newar community, which migrated from Bhaktapur during the war between the Gurkha Army and Bhaktapur. The village holds cultural significance and provides insights into the traditions and lifestyle of the Newar people.
    Once you arrive at Khani Gaon, take the time to explore the village, interact with the locals, and appreciate the unique heritage and architecture of the area. The village is surrounded by scenic beauty and offers a tranquil atmosphere for trekkers.

  6. Day 06 Rest day at Khani Gaon. Explore village.

    During your rest day at Khani Gaon, you have the opportunity to explore and immerse yourself in the charm of this picturesque village. Khani Gaon, which translates to "village of mines," holds historical significance as it was established by people from Bhaktapur after the battle between Bhaktapur and Gorkha in the 18th century. Take the time to visit Dalle Pokhari, a prominent attraction in the village. Dalle Pokhari is a pond or water reservoir that has cultural and religious importance in the Newar community.   7. Day 07 Khani Gaon to Forest Camp 3100m 6hrs.

    On this day of your trek, you will embark on a 6-hour journey from Khani Gaon to Forest Camp, located at an altitude of 3100 meters. Begin your trek with renewed energy after a day of rest and relaxation in Khani Gaon. As you leave Khani Gaon behind, you will traverse a narrow path that winds its way through the enchanting rhododendron and oak forest. The forest is known for its rich biodiversity and vibrant flora, creating a picturesque setting for your trek. Take in the beauty of the surrounding nature as you make your way towards Forest Camp. During your trek, keep your eyes peeled for nomad houses scattered along the trail. These houses serve as shelters for cattle, and they provide a glimpse into the traditional way of life in the region. The presence of these houses adds a cultural touch to your trekking experience.
    The forest also offers opportunities for wildlife sightings and birdwatching. Keep a lookout for various species of birds that inhabit the area, adding melodies to the serene ambience.     After a refreshing breakfast at the forest camp, it's time to continue your trek from the Forest Camp to Pati, located at an altitude of 3770 meters. The estimated trekking duration is around 5 hours. Begin your journey by bidding farewell to the serene forest camp and setting foot on the ascending trail that winds its way through the enchanting rhododendron and pine forest. As you trek along, immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the surroundings and take in the breathtaking mountain views that unfold before you.
    The trail to Pati offers a captivating landscape and is often frequented by pilgrims undertaking the Bhairav Kunda Trek. Along the way, you may encounter fellow trekkers and pilgrims who are utilizing the rest house at Pati as a shelter.   9. Day 09 Pati to Bhairav Kunda Lake 4250m 6hrs.

    As you set off from Pati, you'll begin by following an ascending trail for a couple of hours. This initial part of the trek requires some uphill climbing as you make your way towards the lake. The trail gradually leads you through picturesque meadows adorned with lush green vegetation, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere.
    Upon reaching Bhairav Kunda, you'll be greeted by the mesmerizing sight of the holy lake. Bhairav Kunda holds immense religious significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. It is believed that taking a bath in this lake during the full moon of June or August cleanses devotees of their sins. The lake is named after Bhairav, a fierce and destructive form of Lord Shiva, and is considered a sacred site for pilgrimage.   10. Day 10 Bhairav Kunda to Sherpa Gaon 2600m 6-7hrs.

    After immersing yourself in the spiritual ambience of Bhairav Kunda and taking a holy bath in the sacred lake, you'll begin your ascent towards the ridge. The climb to the ridge usually takes about an hour, and once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Jugal Mountain Range, Langtang, and Rolwaling Mountain Range. Take your time to soak in the awe-inspiring beauty of the surrounding mountain ranges, appreciating the grandeur of nature that unfolds before you. The luminous peaks and the serene atmosphere create a truly mesmerizing experience.
    Following the ridge descent, you'll make your way towards Sherpa Gaon.   11. Day 11 Sherpa Gaon to Larche 1500m

    Leaving Sherpa Gaon, your trek continues towards Larche, which is situated at an altitude of 1500 meters. The trail from Sherpa Gaon to Larche involves a mix of ascending and descending sections. From Sherpa Gaon, you'll initially follow an ascending trail for approximately an hour. The path may be steep as you make your way up, but the effort will be rewarded with mesmerizing views of the Langtang ranges along the way. Take your time to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding mountains and the serene atmosphere.
    After the initial ascent, the trail will gradually descend as you head towards Larche. As you descend, you'll come across Chortens (Buddhist religious structures), Mani walls (stone walls adorned with inscribed prayer mantras), and colourful prayer flags that add a spiritual touch to the journey. The vibrant cultural elements along the trail provide a glimpse into the local traditions and beliefs.
    As you reach Larche, you'll find yourself on the bank of the Bhote Koshi River. Larche serves as a stopover point for trekkers and travelers in the region. Here, you'll have the opportunity to visit the natural hot spring of Tatopani.   12. Day 12 Larche to Kathmandu via Hot Spring 6hrs.

    After departing from Larche, your journey continues towards Hot Spring. The trek from Larche to the Hot Spring takes approximately half an hour. The Hot Spring provides a natural and relaxing experience amidst the picturesque surroundings. Take your time to enjoy the soothing waters and rejuvenate yourself before heading back to Kathmandu.
    Once you have refreshed yourself at the Hot Spring, the next leg of your journey will be a drive back to Kathmandu. The drive from Hot Spring to Kathmandu typically takes around 6 hours, following the Araniko Highway. Along the way, you'll be treated to scenic views of the countryside, offering glimpses of Nepal's natural beauty. As you travel along the Araniko Highway, keep an eye out for the diverse landscapes, traditional villages, and terraced fields that characterize the region. The highway passes through charming towns and rural areas, providing a glimpse into the daily lives of the local people.
