The Everest Mani Rimdu festival is a highly anticipated and captivating Buddhist festival that takes place annually at the Tengboche monastery, an ancient Buddhist monastery located in the Everest region of Nepal. Celebrated between mid-October and mid-November, the dates of the festival are determined according to the Tibetan Lunar calendar and are announced by the head of the Tengboche Monastery Lama.
The Mani Rimdu festival holds immense significance in the realm of High Himalayan culture and tradition. It attracts not only local Nepalese people but also a multitude of tourists who travel to Nepal with their families and friends to witness the vibrant and colourful celebrations at the Tengboche monastery. The festival is a grand display of rituals, dances, and prayers that span over several days. It begins with the chanting of mantras and the practice of meditation, with the belief that kindness and blessings flow in the form of the mantras into the Mandala and the Mani Rilwu pills. These blessings are then released from the Mandala, bestowing blessings upon those who attend the Mani Rimdu festival. Lamas and Sherpas gather at the monastery for five days, collectively dedicating their prayers and rituals to the welfare of the world.
The second day of the Mani Rimdu festival holds special significance as an elaborate and colourful Lama-masked dance takes centre stage. The monks don ornate masks and costumes, and through a series of ritualistic Lama Dances, they dramatize the triumph of Buddhism over Bon, the indigenous religion of Tibet. It is believed that during these dances, the monks enter a state of trance and become god-like beings. These sacred dances are exclusive to the Mani Rimdu festival and cannot be performed for ordinary entertainment purposes.
The third day of the Mani Rimdu festival is particularly lively and amusing, featuring humorous dances and chants. It culminates in the Fire Puja, a ceremonial offering performed in the monastery yard on the day following the dances. The Fire Puja is considered a sacred gift to Agni, the god of fire, as well as to the Gods of the Mandala, aimed at dispelling all harm in the world. Participants envision harm dissolving into the grain and butter that are burned, creating a sense of holiness and purification. At the end of this celebration, the Mandala in the temple is dismantled, and the sand is offered as an offering to the Snake Gods (Nagas).
The Tengboche monastery, where the Mani Rimdu festival is celebrated, lies along the route to Everest Base Camp trekking. This offers an excellent opportunity for trekkers to combine the experience of witnessing the festival with their journey to Everest Base Camp and Kala Pattar. Even for those with limited time, a trek to Tengboche monastery solely to observe the Mani Rimdu festival is a highly rewarding experience, providing deep insights into the vibrant High Himalayan culture and traditions.
The Everest Mani Rimdu festival is a captivating blend of spirituality, tradition, and visual splendour. It allows visitors to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Himalayan Buddhism, witness sacred rituals, and embrace the joyous celebrations that unite both locals and tourists alike.
