Three Pass with EBC Trek

The Three Pass with EBC Trek is a popular choice for adventurous trekkers who want to experience the high passes of the Everest region in Nepal. The trek involves crossing three challenging passes: Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La, without the need for technical climbing gear. This trek offers stunning views of the world's highest peaks and takes you through breathtaking landscapes carved by glaciers above the tree-line.

The journey begins in Chukhung and starts with the crossing of the Kongma La Pass (18,209 ft / 5,550 m) leading to Lobuche. From there, the trail continues over the Cho La Pass (17,782 ft / 5,420 m) and joins the village of Dzongla. The ascent of Kala Patthar (5,545 m) provides a close-up view of Mount Everest. Finally, the return route passes through the Kongma La Pass (5,535 m) or the Imja Tse valley, with stops in Tengboche to enjoy the scenic beauty of Everest, Ama Dablam, Kantega, Kwangde, Nuptse, and Lhotse.

One of the highlights of this trek is the opportunity to witness stunning panoramic views of the world's highest peaks, including Mount Everest, Cho-Oyu, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, Amadablam, and Lobuche. These breathtaking vistas make the trek a truly unforgettable experience.

In addition to the high passes, the trek takes you through glacial landscapes, alpine pastures, and the mesmerizing Gokyo Lakes, including Milk Lake, which is considered the abode of Lord Shiva. The Gokyo Ri (5,483 m) viewpoint offers incredible panoramic views of several majestic mountains.

Cultural exploration is also a significant aspect of the trek. Along the way, you will pass through small villages adorned with Tibetan prayer flags, ancient monasteries, and traditional Sherpa communities. This provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and witness the unique Sherpa way of life.

During the trek, you can visit the Sherpa Museum and school in the village of Khumjung, established by Sir Edmund Hillary as a token of gratitude to the Sherpa community for their support during his Everest ascent.

The terrain of the trek is challenging, involving the crossing of suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River, traversing forests, rhododendron and birch forests, and trekking through yak pastures. The journey also begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, providing an aerial view of the beautiful landscape.

To ensure acclimatization to the high altitudes and reduce the risk of altitude sickness, the itinerary includes rest days in Namche Bazaar and Gokyo. These breaks allow trekkers to adapt to the altitude and enjoy the panoramic views.

The Three Pass with EBC Trek offers a unique opportunity for cultural exchange as well. Trekkers have the chance to interact with the local Sherpa people, learn about their traditions, and gain insights into their way of life.

The Three Pass with EBC Trek is a challenging and rewarding adventure that combines stunning mountain views, glacial landscapes, cultural exploration, and the thrill of crossing high passes in the Everest region of Nepal.

  3. Day 03 Kathmandu to Lukla (Flight) to Phakding

Our adventure begins after a scrumptious breakfast at the hotel, as our guide arrives to take us on an exhilarating flight to Lukla. Flights to Lukla are scheduled in the morning due to the strong afternoon winds, which can make flying challenging. The flight itself is an extraordinary experience, as we soar between towering green hills before landing on a narrow airstrip at the foot of the mountains - it's bound to quicken your heartbeat! The stunning scenery along the way is truly breathtaking. After our exciting and scenic flight, we touch down at Tenzing Hillary Airport in Lukla.
Please note that recent changes in regulations and upgrading of the domestic airport in Kathmandu may require flights to Lukla to operate out of Manthali Airport in Ramechhap District, which is a four-hour drive from Kathmandu at night. From Manthali, the flight to Lukla will depart early in the morning and take only 20 minutes.
Upon our arrival at Tenzing Hillary Airport, we will waste no time as we immediately begin our trek after meeting with our guide and porters. As we journey on, we pass through many quaint villages, fluttering Tibetan prayer flags, and ancient monasteries while encountering friendly locals reciting Tibetan mantras, all to reach our first destination of Phakding.

  5. Day 05 Rest day and acclimatization at Namche Bazaar.

To allow your body to acclimatize to the high altitude, we have scheduled a much-needed break day in Namche Bazaar. This day will provide you with the necessary rest to prepare for the upcoming challenges of trekking to higher altitudes.
During your stay in Namche, your experienced guide will take you to explore the local area. You will visit the Sherpa Museum, which was established by Sir Edmund Hillary as a token of gratitude for the support he received from the Sherpa community during his successful ascent of Mt. Everest. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to visit the school that was built in Khumjung village by Sir Hillary.
To help you adjust to the high altitude, we will also take short treks to the nearby villages of Thame and Khumjung. As you hike uphill, you will have breath-taking views of Ama Dablam, Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Thamserku, Khumbila, and Kwangde. After an eventful day, you will spend the night in a comfortable guesthouse in Namche.
    Accommodation: Tea House/Lodge (B,L,D)

  6. Day 06 Trek from Namche Bazar to Thame Village

Embark on your trek to Thame from Namche Bazaar after a hearty breakfast. Thame Village holds a special place in the hearts of Sherpa climbers, including the legendary Tenzing Norgay, as it is their hometown. As you head towards Thame, the trail turns west and takes you up the Bhote Koshi Valley, which was once a popular trade route between Nepal and Tibet. The trek today is an easy one, as the trail is mostly level and passes through lush green forests, villages, and monasteries, all while offering stunning views of the mountains and valleys. Keep an eye out for wild animals such as deer, mountain goats, and colourful birds. Finally, after crossing a bridge over the Bhote Koshi River, we reach Thame. Spend the night at Thame and rest up for the next day's adventures.
    Accommodation: Tea House/Lodge (B,L,D)

  7. Day 07 Trek from Thame Village to Lunden

AAfter breakfast, it's time to leave Thame and embark on a new trekking adventure. Our route will take us over the large mess of rock that has been used by traders for centuries to cross the Nangpa-La into Tibet. Along the way, we'll pass through Marulung, which was once a salt trading route where Tibetans traded with the Khumbu people until 2008. As we follow the Bhote Koshi River upstream, we'll come across many Chortens and monasteries that add to the charm of this beautiful region. Once we cross the small wooden bridge, we'll leave the trade route behind and make a short climb up the grassy field to reach Lunden village.
    Accommodation: Tea House/Lodge (B,L,D)

  8. Day 08 Trekking over Renjo La Pass (5,360 m/17,580 Ft) to Gokyo Lake (4,790 m/15,710 Ft)

You will start your day early to embark on an exhilarating ascent through the mountainous terrain, taking in breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and peaks. The trail leads you upwards until you reach the stunning Renjo-La pass (5360m), offering a panoramic view of the Gokyo valley and its shimmering lakes. As you make your way across the steep and challenging path, you'll be rewarded with magnificent vistas of towering peaks, including Cho Oyu (8201m), Lhotse (8516m), Everest (8848.86m), Cholatse (6335m), and Taboche (6367m). From here, you'll continue on to Gokyo valley, nestled next to the serene Gokyo Lake (Dudh Pokhari) and the formidable Ngozumpa glacier. The evening may see a greater influx of trekkers than in Thame Valley due to the popularity of Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Ri (5360m), so accommodation options may be more limited.
    Accommodation: Tea House/Lodge (B,L,D)

  9. Day 09 Day trek to Ngozumpa Tse (5,700 m/18,696 Ft)

Take a break from trekking today and explore the stunning Gokyo valley with its mesmerizing views of the Himalayas and glaciers. Wander around Gokyo Lake, also known as the 3rd lake, and you might even catch a reflection of the surrounding mountains on its surface. Gokyo is nestled next to the colossal Ngozumpa glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal.
If you're up for an adventure, you can opt for a side trip to the Fifth Lake via the Fourth Lake, or trek to the top of Gokyo Ri. Located on the northern edge of the lake, Gokyo Ri towers above the village. Begin your hike just after sunrise, ascending a steep path up the hillside. As you climb, the peaks of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu slowly come into view, and the panoramic vista from the summit of Gokyo Ri is one of the most awe-inspiring in the Everest region.
    Accommodation: Tea House/Lodge (B,L,D)

  10. Day 10 Hike up to Gokyo Ri and Trek to Thagnak

For trekkers who prefer to take it easy, a morning hike up to the ridge overlooking Ngozumpa Glacier is a great option for acclimatizing. However, for those who want to conquer Gokyo Ri, the best time to climb is in the morning when the views are clearer. Once you've made it to the top, the panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu are simply breathtaking.
If you're up for some more hiking, a short trek takes you to the fourth Gokyo Lake. Although, it's not the lake itself, the viewpoint above the lake offers a stunning vantage point. From there, you can cross the glacier and rocky terrain to get to Thagnak. The village has limited teahouses, and it's from here that most trekkers plan to cross the Chola Pass the next day.
    Accommodation: Tea House/Lodge (B,L,D)

  11. Day 11 Thagnak to Dzongla via Chola Pass

Today's trek is one of the most demanding and arduous of the entire journey, as we undertake an early morning start around 3 am to tackle the Chola Pass. This pass links the primary Everest Base Camp trail with the Gokyo region and necessitates the use of crampons due to the vertical path and slippery, smooth ice rocks encountered along the way. Though not inherently challenging, the steep gradient of Cho La Pass requires us to navigate a glacier crossing on the eastern side. Upon reaching the summit adorned with fluttering prayer flags, the imposing Ama Dablam stands guard over an array of majestic peaks, including Cholatse to the west, Lobuche to the east, and Baruntse to our right. After traversing through some crevasses, we will eventually reach the village of Dzongla, which provides a stunning panorama of Cholatse, Lobuche, Ama Dablam, and the distant village of Pheriche below. The breathtaking views offered by this route make up for the long and arduous journey. We will end our challenging day in the serene Cho Dzongla village, where we can finally unwind, rest and relish a sumptuous dinner.
    Accommodation: Tea House/Lodge (B,L,D)

  12. Day 12 Dzongla to Lobuche

The trek from Dzongla to Lobuche is a leisurely one, with no need to walk for an extended period, and the trail is not too challenging. This means we can take our time and savor the natural beauty that surrounds us. As we make our way, the path gently ascends and descends, leading us through a grassy trail that provides stunning views of Lobuche Peak. The route eventually winds its way through a riverbed before reaching the charming village of Lobuche. This quaint hamlet is located near a stream, and watching the sunset over Nuptse from here is a truly unforgettable sight. Once we arrive at Lobuche, we can take a well-deserved break and unwind.
    Accommodation: Tea House/Lodge (B,L,D)

  13. Day 13 Lobuche to Gorakshep (Afternoon hike to EBC)

Today is the day you've been waiting for! The highlight of the trek is the journey to Everest Base Camp (5,364m), which provides the closest view of Mt. Everest for non-climbers. The trek follows the left bank of Khumbu Glacier, and includes a steep climb up to Changri Glacier followed by a short descent to reach Gorak Shep. This stretch takes about two and a half hours to complete. After taking a lunch break and dropping off our belongings, we'll embark on an excursion to Everest Base Camp (5,364m). Many hikers opt to trek up to Kalapattar to catch the stunning sunset view of Mt. Everest instead of hiking to base camp on the same day. Those who choose this option can explore Everest Base Camp the next day before trekking back to Pheriche.
    Accommodation: Tea House/Lodge (B,L,D)

  14. Day 14 Gorakshep to Lobuche village. (Morning Hike to Kala Patthar)

If we didn't make it to Kalapatthar yesterday, but if that's the case, we'll tackle it this morning. Weather permitting, of course. The trek to Kalapatthar begins early in the morning and takes about 3-4 hours to complete. At the top of this narrow hill, you'll find the most spectacular views of Everest that Nepal has to offer. Keep in mind, this is the highest altitude you can reach in Nepal without a climbing permit. We'll return to Gorakshep for breakfast before heading to Pheriche. The hike to Pheriche takes around 4 hours and once there, you can take in the sights of this small settlement. Be sure to check out the Himalayan Rescue Association clinic, which offers services to trekkers and climbers experiencing altitude sickness or other altitude-related health issues. After dinner, you can retire to your room and rest up.
    Accommodation: Tea House/Lodge (B,L,D)

  15. Day 15 Trek from Lobuche to Dingboche via Khongma-La 5535m

You will begin your trek early in the morning towards Kongma La Pass, which is a part of the famous Everest three passes trek, and offers an unforgettable adventure experience. The trek involves crossing the Khumbu Glacier, which can be challenging as the path is not clearly defined. It is important to follow your guide's footprints and continue on the amazing hike towards the Kongma La pass, where you will be treated to breathtaking views of Mount Nuptse, Lhotse, and the great wall, as well as Makalu and Amadablam. Once you have crossed the high passes, you will descend steeply to Dingboche, all the while admiring the exceptional mountain views and valley scenery.
    Accommodation: Tea House/Lodge (B,L,D)

  16. Day 16 Dingboche to Namche Bazar Via Tengboche Monastery

Begin your day with an early start and leave Dingboche behind. The chilly weather is a reminder that the sun hasn't yet reached the trail. As you make your way down, the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation. The barren, rocky terrain gives way to a friendlier environment of lush trees, shrubs, and vibrant greens. Take a moment to savor this change, as it won't come around again anytime soon.
While en route to Namche Bazaar, make a stop at the Tengboche Monastery for a midday meal. This spiritual site is a popular spot for climbers to receive blessings before embarking on their ascent of the world's tallest peak.
Upon reaching Namche Bazaar, indulge in a hot shower and unwind from the day's trek. Ask your guide to suggest some local cafes where you can sample freshly baked cookies or your favorite coffee. It's time to celebrate your successful journey to Everest! Take advantage of the Wi-Fi service to reconnect with loved ones back home and share a few pictures of your adventures.
    Accommodation: Tea House/Lodge (B,L,D)

  17. Day 17 Namche to Lukla

As you continue trekking, you will pass through several charming local villages, soaking in the sights and sounds of the Khumbu region. Finally, you will arrive at Lukla, where you will spend your last evening at a Tea House. It's a time to celebrate your achievement with your trekking crew, who have been your companions and supporters throughout your journey. As you reflect on your experiences and the challenges you've overcome, you may experience mixed emotions, but you can take pride in the fact that you have accomplished something truly remarkable.
