Bhairav Kund is named after the destructive aspect of Lord Shiva and is one of the sacred pilgrimage sites for Shamans. Both Hindus and Buddhist devotees visit this high altitude (4200m) holy mountain lake to pay homage and bathe away sins during every Bhadra (August) Full Moon. Jalbire, the starting point for this trek is a five hour bus ride from Kathmandu towards the Tibetan border. We travel through a mixture of beautiful mountain scenery and the terraced fields and characteristic houses of rural villages from different ethnic groups.

You will spend your first night experiencing the 'Newari' culture of Jalbire. Your Guide will give a short talk on trekking, altitude sickness and the highlights of the trek. These include the holy Bhairav Kund, the incredible Himalayan scenery and the life style of nomadic people unchanged by time. Your trail winds along an old trade route between Nepal and Tibet. through a number of unspoilt Buddhist villages, past chortens and Sherpa houses. The unusual climatic and geographical mix make this area a naturalist's dream and a mecca for those who appreciate traditional cultures.

Along the trail you will experience spectacular views of mountains in Tibet. and the Jugal Himal section of the Himalayan Range, which includes the peaks of Dorje Lakpa (6966), Madiya (6257M) and Phurbi Ghhyachu (6637m). NOTE: This trek can be done all year round except for the monsoon months and can be combined with a rafting tour.

Itinerary

  1. Day 01 Arrival at Kathmandu.

    You will be welcomed by our staff standing with your name card in the airport arrival terminal and transferred to your hotel by a private vehicle. Your hotel is in the middle of the city. You will have nothing planned for the day, so take a rest and gather the energy to walk on the trails. Else, if you have some personal gears to buy, you can go shopping in the Market in the evening. There will be a small meeting about the trek in the evening. You will spend a night in a hotel.

  2. Day 02 Drive from Kathmandu to Jalbire 3hrs by bus.

    Early in the morning, you have a nice scenic drive of 6-7 hours. During this drive, you can enjoy the view of beautiful mountains and rural villages along the roadside. Driving on a bumpy road, we enter Balephi Valley alongside and will leave the main road and choose the gravel road from Balephi Valley to Jalbire. This is the prehistoric village of Newar community. It is located close to the edge of Balephi River.

  3. Day 03 Jalbire to Chanaute 1350m 5hrs.

    Bhairav Kunda Trek begins on this day. We will move along the Balephi River for a couple of hours before passing through dispersed settlements of Tamang ethics to arrive at Chanaute. This is a village of Brahmin and Chhetri ethics. Explore Chanute and stay overnight.

  4. Day 04 Chanaute to Khani Gaon 2000m 5-6hrs.

    Early in the morning after breakfast, leave Chanute and follow the ascending trail to the forest. Continuing walking through the forest as we witness the diverse floras and faunas. Enjoy the scenic mountain views from the top of the ridge and then descend through dispersed settlements to Khani Gaon. This is the village of Newar ethics. Village in Khanigaon was established by Newars from Bhaktapur who migrated to this village during the war between Gurkha Army and Bhaktapur.

  5. Day 05 Rest day at Khani Gaon. Explore village.

    Today is all about exploring the beautiful village of Khanigaon and enjoying the surrounding mountain views. Khani means “source of mines ’’ and Gaon means “village’’. The people from Bhaktapur settled in this village after the battle between Bhaktapur and Gorkha in the 18th century. Visit the Dalle Pokhari and interact with the local Newar whilst tasting their food and enjoying their native dialect. Overnight at Khanigaon.

  6. Day 06 Khani Gaon to Forest Camp 3100m 6hrs.

    After a day of rest, we will get rejuvenated. Start the trek with a new energy. Leaving Khani Gaon, walk through the narrow path stretching across the rhododendron and oak forest and once you reach Forest Camp in 6-7 hours. During the trek, you can see nomad houses, wild birds, and animals. With some luck, you may also spot bears and leopards.

  7. Day 07 Forest Camp to Pati 3770m 5hrs.

    After breakfast at the camp, leave the forest camp and take the ascending trail through rhododendron and pine forest to arrive at Pati. The route offers exquisite mountain views. We will reach Pati. Walk nearby the rest house at Pati which is being used as a shelter by pilgrims who are on Bhairav Kunda Trek.

  8. Day 08 Pati to Bhairav Kunda Lake 4250m 6hrs.

    Pati to Bhairav Kunda trek follow the ascending trail for about couple of hour and then a casual walking further through the meadow of lush green vegetation, to Bhairav Kund. Bhairav Kunda is a holy place of the Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims along with Shamans who come to take a bath in this lake during the full moon of June/August which supposedly frees them of their sins. The devotees of Lord Shiva worship in the temple situated by the lake. This lake exists at 4250m altitude.

  9. Day 09 Bhairav Kunda to Sherpa Gaon 2600m 6-7hrs.

    Bhairav Kunda is the sacred lake. Pilgrims from as far as India visit this lake once a year during the festivals. Take the holy bath in the lake or explore the shore. We will then climb the ridge for about an hour and reach the top from where we will enjoy the views of Jugal Mountain Range, Langtang and Rolwaling Mountain Range. Descend from the ridge and make it to Sherpa Gaon which simply means Village of Sherpa ethics.

  10. Day 10 Sherpa Gaon to Larcha (1500m.)

    Leave Sherpa Gaon and follow the ascending trail for about an hour it will again be a steep downhill trek as you head for Larcha which is located on the bank of Bhote Koshi River. Visit the natural hot spring of Tatopani, and enjoy a warm bath to relax your muscles after an exhausting trek.

  11. Day 11 Larche to Kathmandu via Hot Spring 6hrs.

    About half an hour of the trek will take us to Hot Spring. From Hot Spring, we will return back to Kathmandu. It will be a 6 hour drive back on Araniko Highway with a scenic countryside view.

  12. Day 12 Departure

    Breakfast at the hotel. Free & easy until the representative of our team will transfer you to the airport and Depart to own country.
